Basics of Organization Unit(OU) vs Domain

Is made up of a group of clients and servers, under the control of a central security database.

Active Directory (AD) is a directory service created by Microsoft using a variety of standardized protocols to provide a variety of network services, including:

Central location for network administration and security



Users authenticate once to a centralized server known as a domain controller

Individual servers and services accept the user based on approvals of the domain controller

Organization Unit, (also known as containers)
An OU is basically a container that the adminastrator creates. An OU can contain users, groups, data and computers.

Organization Unit is used to organize users and objects(files, printers, applications)

Also use an OU to apply security policies, deploy applications, delegate admin control

Another use for OUs is to create a hierarchy of containers within a domain. This is called nesting, when an OU contains another OU, also known as child and parent.

Its recommended that there is atleast one person responsible for the OU.
